It's a book by Dostoevsky. It was on the floor in front of me when I started fixing up these boards. It's the closest Dostoevsky ever came to writing a funny book.

It's about a civil servant who hates everyone and everything and just wants to be left alone to rot in a corner. In the seventh half of the book, he mistakes the professional courtesy of a prostitute for genuine romantic interest, and becomes even more disillusioned.
